watching tv

I'm watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and characters keep commenting what "5 by 5" means, as in "Are you allright?" "5 by 5." Ok, so here my geekiness is starting to show again. It's how you reply when someone asks for a radio check. "How are you receiving?" "5 by 5", meaning receiving strong and clear. Ok, yes, I'm a HAM radio operator, tech level, no code. End geekiness.

Wow! I'm impressed! You must be able to send and receive in Morse and everything!

I do wish I was geekier.

Technician with no (Morse) code is the lowest level of FCC license. It lets me get on a few limited frequencies to talk, mainly Skywarn so I can report severe weather. I didn't bother trying to take the code test, I can't understand enough letters to make a guess at the message I would have to receive as a part of the test.
